Local facilities for 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games - Council urges residents to have their say
The council is urging Royal Borough residents to have their say about the temporary facilities needed to stage the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic rowing and canoeing events at Dorney Lake. A public exhibition of London 2012 proposals is taking place at: • Royal Windsor Racecourse on Thursday 12 August (4 - 8pm) and • The Finish Tower, Dorney Lake on Friday 13 August (12 noon - 8pm) and Saturday 14 August (11am - 3pm). The games organisers want to provide a temporary pedestrian bridge for spectators crossing the Thames from the racecourse to the games on the Dorney side of the river. They also propose to reduce traffic by using the racecourse as a transport hub, providing one pick up and drop off point for spectators. The exhibition is being staged to get local people's views before two planning applications are submitted to the Royal Borough and South Bucks District Council later in the summer. Planning applications also have to be submitted to Bucks County Council and South Bucks District Council for other elements of the games infrastructure, including areas for athletes and officials, temporary seating and operational and broadcast compounds. Cllr Simon Dudley, the council's lead member for the Olympics, said it was important for residents - particularly in the local area - to visit the exhibition to see what London 2012 is proposing. He said: "The Olympics and Paralympics will mean a huge influx of people into the Eton Dorney area and the Royal Borough will be working with the organisers to ensure that disruption is kept to the absolute minimum. However, we have to be realistic and appreciate that with an expected 30,000 people heading for the venue each day, plus many thousands of media representatives, there will be an inevitable impact on the local area. "The exhibition is a good first glimpse of what London 2012 is proposing. It is vital that as many people as possible attend so they can feed into the consultation process even before it gets to the planning application stage." Cllr Alison Knight, lead member for planning and development, said: "As well as providing feedback through the current consultation, residents will have their chance to comment as part of the normal planning process. "The planning applications are expected in October so residents should watch out for details on the council's website at www.rbwm.gov.uk or even better sign up for My Alerts on the website which means they will be notified when the applications come in. Residents can then send in their comments for the development control panel to consider before taking decisions about whether or not to grant the applications." London 2012 says that the planning applications will be submitted in October. It is likely that the Royal Borough will consider them before Christmas. Residents can view and comment on the plans by: • going online at www.london2012.com/etondorneyconsultation • calling Freephone 0800 198 2012 • writing to Freepost 2012 Games. The closing date is Tuesday 31 August. |
